Manual Removal

If the nuisance is only minor and your plants are starting to suffer, then you may be able to remove the aphids physically. All you need is a good pair of gardening gloves and a brush. You can brush the insects with leaves in a container. Another option is to sprinkle the infected stalk, which, in turn, prevents aphids from spreading to healthy parts of plants. Finally, drop all the aphids into the soapy water to kill them.

Neem Oil

Neem is the natural pesticide, and it uses to kill aphids. Neem oil is also useful on other insects like beetles, ants, caterpillar, etc.

  • Take 2 tbsp of neem oil and 1 tbsp of liquid soap in the spray bottle.
  • Fill rest of the bottle with water and shake it well.
  • Spray the solution on the plant either in the morning or the evening.
  • Repeat this 2 to 3 times a day.


Garlic is the best option for aphids from the garden as it contains sulfur and it also contains antifungal agent which keeps your plants safe from fungus-related diseases.

  • Take four cloves of garlic and add them to 2 tbsp of mineral oil.
  • Keep the mixture for 24 hours.
  • Strain out the garlic pieces.
  • Add the garlic-infused oil to 2 cups of water.
  • Add one teaspoon of liquid dish soap and mix well. You can also add a little cayenne pepper.
  • Put two tablespoons of the mixture into a spray bottle, along with 2 cups of water.
  • Spray it on the infested plants, paying particular attention to the undersides of the leaves.
  • Repeat 1 or 2 times a week, as needed.

Beneficial Insect

You can also protect your plants from harmful aphids by starting active ones in your garden. Ladybirds, also called Ladybug Beetle, are beneficial bugs that you can easily find in gardening shops. In fact, women can eat around 50 to 100 aphids per day! Green lacewings and hoverflies are also known for eating aphids.

Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural insecticide. It consists of the fossils of tiny aquatic organisms known as diatoms. The microscopically sharp edges of diatoms can cut through the protective coverings of insects and ultimately kill them.

  • Pour the little amount of Food-Grade DE around the garden and plants.
  • Do this in the early morning or the evening.
  • The moisture helps the DE adhere to the plant.
  • Repeat once or twice a week as needed.

Tomato Leaves

Tomato leaves contain the toxic compound known as alkaloids which help to get rid of aphids.

  • Take the 1-2 cup of tomato leaves and finely chopped it and leave it in water overnight.
  • Take all the leaves out from the water on next morning.
  • Mix 1 cup of water on that solution and transfer it into the spray bottle.
  • Spray it on the stems and foliage of the infested plants.
  • Use the solution two times a week. Not more than this.

Blast of Water

You can also get rid of aphids by spraying water on your plants. If you blast a pool on your station, then the pressure of the water will remove all aphids from the leaves and stem.

Fill your garden sprayer with water and start hosing down your plants, especially on both tops and bottoms of the leaves. Always spray infected plants with the hand sprayer in the early morning when the sun is not very strong, and when it is not going to rain. Make sure not to be too harsh on your plants, as it can affect their health.

Liquid Soap

You can also get rid of aphids from a plant by spraying liquid soap on it.

Aphids have a waxy protective coating on their bodies that dissolves upon coming in contact with soapy water. This, in turn, dehydrates the insects and eventually kills them without harming the plant.

  • Take 1 cup of water and 1 tbsp of liquid soap in the spray bottle.
  • Mix it well and spray it on the plants.
  • Do it early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Repeat this 2-3 times a week.

Organic Fertilizer

Avoid that fertilizer which contains high nitrogen as it produces aphids in your garden. These insects get attracted by high nitrogen level. Instead of using high nitrogen fertilizer use compost or organic fertilizer. These fertilizers release nutrients slowly and hugely benefit your plants.

Helpful Plants

Along with introducing beneficial bugs into your garden, you can add some useful plants to help get rid of aphids. Some of the facilities that can keep aphids away from your garden include catnip, mustard, oregano, dill, fennel, clover, nasturtium, garlic, and chives. The strong odor of garlic, oregano, and catnip attract beneficial bugs, which in turn keep aphids away. Plant these herbs near lettuce, peas or rose bushes.
